National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC),ISRO has prepared a geo-spatial database of urban water bodies under AMRUT program of Ministry of Housing & Urban affairs for 500 cities of the country.
Features of Urban Water Information System (UWIS)
- The dashboard portal contains detailed information of urban water bodies for 500 AMRUT cities and associated aquifers for 10 cities as pilot study.
- Users (MoHUA) can visualize various aspects of the urban water bodies (temporal water spread, quality, land-use change etc.) along with characteristics of urban aquifer (ground water prospects, seasonal ground water quality & water level fluctuation, aquifer health-sustainability etc.).
- Aquifer health has been calculated through geo-spatial integration of thematic layers (e.g. ground water prospects, seasonal water level fluctuation).
- Aquifer sustainability layer is helpful for the decision makers for construction/development of artificial recharge structures in stressed aquifers.
- Interactive user defined area based query module is present, showcasing aquifer (ground water bearing rock/strata) characteristics in the area of interest.
- Urban aquifers are subjected to the abstraction-recharge condition and urban development. Thus more emphasis were given to protect and rejuvenate urban water bodies to improve the groundwater recharge conditions in terms of aquifer storage & recovery (ASR) for urban aquifer sustainability.
