National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC),ISRO has prepared a geo-spatial database of urban water bodies under AMRUT program of Ministry of Housing & Urban affairs for 500 cities of the country.

Features of Urban Water Information System (UWIS)

  1. The dashboard portal contains detailed information of urban water bodies for 500 AMRUT cities and associated aquifers for 10 cities as pilot study.
  2. Users (MoHUA) can visualize various aspects of the urban water bodies (temporal water spread, quality, land-use change etc.) along with characteristics of urban aquifer (ground water prospects, seasonal ground water quality & water level fluctuation, aquifer health-sustainability etc.).
  3. Aquifer health has been calculated through geo-spatial integration of thematic layers (e.g. ground water prospects, seasonal water level fluctuation).
  4. Aquifer sustainability layer is helpful for the decision makers for construction/development of artificial recharge structures in stressed aquifers.
  5. Interactive user defined area based query module is present, showcasing aquifer (ground water bearing rock/strata) characteristics in the area of interest.
  6. Urban aquifers are subjected to the abstraction-recharge condition and urban development. Thus more emphasis were given to protect and rejuvenate urban water bodies to improve the groundwater recharge conditions in terms of aquifer storage & recovery (ASR) for urban aquifer sustainability.
